The Sound of Blackpentecostal Noise Grows Flowers, Is Floral (number 3) (2018)

one of my favorite things to remember about blackpentecostalism is the sound of the tambourine. every so often, an older senior that we affectionately called ‘the tambourine man’ would visit churches with a huge leather (pleather? leather-ish? i can’t remember, though i do think it was dark blue) bag and he’d come to ours and have various tambourines to purchase. i’m sure he knew the churches needed him to visit often because we were prone to break them because we shouted a lot and had testimony service every service and we’d use the tambourine for the rhythmic noise it’d produce. so much of the sound of blackpentecostalism is considered noise but we knew – because we felt – that there was life in that noice. one just had to withdraw into the sociality of the given sonic praise.
