to be encouraged to prooftext, to use scripture to defend scripture, to bespeak the truth of one passage by referencing another passage. this was the knowledge practice i engaged as a young person. it’s a way to “know” but it is hermetically sealed, enclosed. and the only extrabiblical text that i’d accept were those that underscored the truth i was claiming. i’m using the practice of layering to think about proof and evidence and truth, too, to consider how we know what we know, and perhaps how we can engage more generous, charitable and just critique.
