another occasion to think about hiddenness and practice. i may start recording the process. i sang each of the hymns as i laid them on the canvas. sorta thinking with theaster gates’s performance work. singing, the sonic, is the held and withheld given in the visual. so this piece, like all of the pieces that include hymns, are audiovisual performances. so of course i’m thinking of and with fred moten too. these are compositions, like music, and though i’m not a music sight reader, i can still know the songs because of the worlds i inhabited. and imagine music because of it. hiddenness in and as sound and song.
